Chapter Fourteen

Andrew eyed the glass of brandy which had been handed to him, a little uncertain as to whether or not he ought to drink it. He had been a good deal more cautious of late and even though the poisoned whiskey had been over a sennight ago, he still found his heart filled with nervousness every time he was given something to eat or drink at whatever occasion he attended.

“I watched that being poured myself,” Lord Wrexham murmured, coming around to stand beside Andrew. “You need not worry. There is nothing in it.”

“I thank you.” Andrew took a sip and then let out a slow breath. “I am sorry I am so uncertain at times like these. After what happened – ”

“I quite understand.” Lord Wrexham smiled. “Might I ask if Miss Grifford has given you an answer as yet?”

Andrew’s brow furrowed. “No, she has not. I confess that I did think she would give me her answer immediately and that she would not wait for such a long time considering.”

“Oh?” Lord Wrexham arched any eyebrow and then chuckled. “Why should you think such a thing? Do you not think that the lady ought to consider all that might happen because of a connection between you, should there be one? After all, you are asking a great deal of her.”

“Am I?” Andrew frowned. “I did not think it was all that significant. When the connection comes to an end – that is, after I have discovered who it is that has done such a thing and why – I will then be the one responsible for it in whatever way that Miss Grifford decides, and she will then be able to continue on, just as she pleases.”

“But society will notice that and consider her a little…. affected because of it,” Lord Wrexham explained, quietly. “She may not bear the blame but the ton will still whisper about her. She is also a young lady attempting to find a suitable match for herself, is she not? And in accepting your courtship – a courtship which she knows will soon come to an end, she is effectively ruining her chances of a successful Season. She will have to wait until next Season and, given how her mother and father treat her, can you be certain that she will be given that?”

Andrew rubbed one hand over his chin, sucking in a breath as he looked away. “I – in truth, I had not thought of such a thing as that.”

“So you can see now why she is considering things,” Lord Wrexham said, making Andrew nod. “She is a very considerate young lady to even be thinking of accepting such a thing for your sake. She will be giving up a great deal.”

Clearing his throat, Andrew nodded again but said nothing, taking a sip of his whiskey and letting the sensation flood him. It was warm and it settled him a little, leaving him with a fresh understanding of Miss Grifford and all she was offering him in doing as she did.
